Thong Sala Koh Phangan is the island's main town and ferry port. Every ferry docks at Thong Sala pier, and the town has the banks, the hospital, the supermarkets and the night markets, but no swimming beach worth the trip. It is the cheapest base on the island and the easiest place to arrive late.
This guide covers the pier and the ferries, the Saturday Walking Street and Phantip night market, practical services, and whether to sleep here. It draws on Thai Holiday Guide and its Koh Phangan overview, plus the ferry guides on this site and two GetYourGuide listings we checked on 6 November 2026.

Thong Sala Koh Phangan Pier and Ferries
Thai Holiday Guide says all ferries dock at Thong Sala pier, operated by Lomprayah, Seatran and Raja. The Koh Samui crossing takes about 30 minutes, and the Surat Thani crossing 3 to 4 hours. It does not state the distance from the pier to the town centre, but the pier and the main street are close enough that most arrivals walk or take a short ride.
Our Koh Samui to Koh Phangan ferry guide has the timetable and fares, Surat Thani to Koh Phangan and Koh Phangan to Surat Thani cover the mainland, and Koh Phangan to Koh Tao covers the northern crossing. Heading south after you land, our Thong Sala pier to Haad Rin guide explains the road. The widget below searches the crossing on 12Go.

Thong Sala Koh Phangan Markets
The Saturday Walking Street runs on Chinese Street, near the post office and a short walk from the pier, from 16:00 to 22:00, per Thai Holiday Guide. Entry is free. Food stalls sell som tam, pad thai cooked to order, and grilled fish and squid, alongside crafts, clothing and jewellery. Cash is needed at most stalls, and the same page suggests arriving by 17:00 for shorter queues because popular stalls sell out before closing.
The Phantip Night Food Market runs nightly. Thai Holiday Guide says to arrive by 6 pm because it closes early, and gives 40 to 80 baht per dish. Some map apps list the Saturday market as Pantip Market, and the sources we read do not say whether it is the same place as Phantip, so check the location before you walk over. Our Koh Phangan night markets guide covers every market on the island.
Bring cash
Both markets are mostly cash-only. There are ATMs in town, so withdraw before you go.
