Sunset over the Gulf of Thailand seen from Koh Phangan
A Koh Phangan sunset over the Gulf of Thailand.

A Koh Phangan sunset is best on the west coast, where Haad Salad faces west and Zen Beach is recommended for sunset and dinner. The island also has hilltop viewpoints and a few south-coast beaches that catch the evening light, so you can plan a sunset without a long drive from wherever you are staying.

This guide lists the best places for a Koh Phangan sunset by coast and by type, with directions where our sources give them. It draws on Thai Holiday Guide's Koh Phangan overview, Home Is Where Your Bag Is's guide to viewpoints and its Haad Rin page, all read on 6 November 2026. Check the sunset time for your date before you go.

West Coast: The Classic Koh Phangan Sunset

It describes Haad Yao as a long, relaxed beach with budget bungalows and some cliffside resorts, and Zen Beach as the quietest beach on the west coast, recommended for sunset and dinner. For a Koh Phangan sunset with no crowd, Zen Beach is the one to try first.

Viewpoints for a Koh Phangan Sunset Above the Trees

Home Is Where Your Bag Is lists several viewpoints. Wat Khao Tham is signposted left off the road from Thong Sala towards Haad Rin, near Baan Tai, a few minutes by scooter, on a hill inside the temple complex. Apichada Villa and its sunset bar are further along: continue straight past Family Mart instead of taking the curve toward Haad Rin, drive about 5 minutes, then follow the sign and the small hill. It is higher than Wat Khao Tham. On the west coast, the Haad Son viewpoint is not signposted, and you stop just before the bay, right after Sea Garden 2 Hotel, at a Koh Phangan map.

Bring a light

The climb back down can be in the dark after a Koh Phangan sunset, so bring a torch or your phone light and wear closed shoes.

Koh Phangan Sunset on the South Coast: Ban Tai and Haad Rin

Thai Holiday Guide describes Baan Tai as a safe first-timer base with beachfront resorts, but says the beach is not the prettiest on the island. It still photographs well at dusk, as our picture shows. Haad Rin Nai, or Sunset Beach, is the calmer beach on the west side of the southern tip, and Thai Holiday Guide says it is calmer and shadier in the afternoons. See our Rin Nai Beach guide for the details.
