Essential beach tips for Koh Samui
East vs West coast
East coast (Chaweng, Lamai) is best Dec–Apr. West coast (Taling Ngam, Lipa Noi) is calmer year-round and catches stunning sunsets.
Rainy season
Oct–Nov is the wettest period. The gulf coast can have rough seas. West coast beaches are sheltered and more reliable during this period.
Sun & protection
UV is intense year-round. SPF 50 is a minimum. Reef-safe sunscreen is recommended to protect Koh Samui's marine life.
Getting around
Renting a scooter is the best way to beach-hop. Songthaews (shared taxis) connect the main beaches. Avoid tuk-tuks — they're overpriced.
